I'm not Enough
Episode 2
Emily's parents raised her with a rigid moral framework and held her to high expectations so much that slight deviations attracted punitive measures. It was a disciplinarian approach to parenting.
An approach that meant that young Emily couldn't share experiences with her parents that didn't fall within that spectrum of expectations and moral standards they held her to even though such experiences weren't her doing. So Emily concealed these kinds of experiences from her parents and kept them to herself.
Even when she summoned the courage to tell them, she knew they wouldn't believe her. What's more, the culprits were people her parents trusted. They would dismiss her story as childish imaginations.
Growing up, Emily had dealt with experiences that impacted her perception of the world around her. As a kid, a close neighbor took advantage of her naivety to subject her to an experience kids her age shouldn't even have an idea of. And because he knew she was too naive to know what he was doing to her and wasn't gonna report his indiscretions he continued to take advantage of her.
Because her parents trusted this neighbor, they didn't have a problem leaving her with him. When they were left alone, he would continue in his immoral venture. And because her parents trusted him, she couldn't tell them what he was doing to her. She felt they wouldn't trust her. To conceal his act, he would threaten young Emily.
Emily also had to face a similar experience with the motorcyclist that was hired to take her around. She would always object to going on errands when sent with the motorcyclist because he was taking advantage of her situation.
But despite all these experiences, Emily still remained a virgin. These experiences had an impact on her early years and shaped her world view until she did something remarkable: freeing up her past and forgiving her oppressors. That decision shaped her life and enhanced her self image. Even more importantly, it detached her from an unpleasant past.
